Sprints

Such as: 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, relays

Suits people who: Are quick.

Hurdles

Such as: 100mH, 110mH, 400mH

Suits people who: Are quick and agile.

Middle Distance

Such as: 800m, 1500m, 1 mile 3000m

Suits people who: Aren't extremely quick over short distances, but can maintain that speed for longer. Have good tactical awareness and can think quickly.

Steeplechase

Suits people who: Have a lot of endurance and agility. Strong legs. Determination. Don't mind getting wet.

Such as: 5000m, 10,000m, half marathon, marathon

Suits people who: Are usually small and light and have lots of endurance and determination. Are prepared to put in long hours of training in all weathers.

Jumps & Vaults

Such as: Long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault

Suits people who: Have speed, agility, gymnastic ability and explosive strength. Have long, strong limbs.

Throws

Such as: Discus, Shot putt, hammer, javelin

Suits people who: Have a strong upper body, are heavy.

Multi-events

Such as: Pentathlon, Heptathlon, decathlon, double heptathlon, double decathlon, triathlon, modern triathlon, modern pentathlon

Suits people who: Are good all-rounders, but may not have the ability to succeed fully in one event, or enjoy a number of disciplines or sports. Are prepared to put in long hours of training every week.
