cross country

Cross-Country is a great sport, because it is one of the few sports where people of all abilities can compete together. No matter how good or bad you are, there will usually be people there who are about your speed.

Cross-country races vary greatly in size. They can be quite small with just a few people in, but the big men's races can have over 2000 participants.

Cross-country is a winter sport, and is run in all weathers, so you have to be tough, and be able to brave wind, driving rain, hail and snow. You also can't be scared about getting muddy!

Kit

You don't need any specialist kit to start running, but more cross-country runners will wear spikes when they compete. They are special shoes with metal spikes in the bottom which help you to grip to the terrain.

Season

Cross-country is usually run in order to keep athletes fit during the winter season, but it's great for people who play any summer sport who want to keep their fitness levels up. Running is also shown to be one of the best sports for losing weight and reducing stress levels.
